K. aureispora, sectioned
The truffle Kjeldsenia aureispora is named in honor of SOMA co-founder, Dr. Chris Kjeldsen. It is an unusual genus that has a white outside peridium that stains yellow then turns reddish brown upon handling. The holotype was collected on Hwy 20 in Mendocino County, CA and was published by one of Dr. Kjeldsen's former students, Dr. Wes Colgan III.
Kjeldsenia is placed in the family Cortinariaceae and is thought to be close to Hymenogaster.
