Toni Sardelis
I am completing my final semester at the College of the Redwoods in Eureka, California, and will begin undergraduate studies in Botany at Cal Poly Humboldt in January. Under the mentorship of Dr. David Largent, Professor Emeritus of Mycology, I work on projects involving the preparation of holotype specimens from herbarium collections for DNA sequencing. My work includes detailed analyses of microscopic and macroscopic features of sequenced fungal collections. Currently,I am engaged in a work-study program at the College of the Redwoods Natural History Museum, focusing on maintaining herbarium specimens by ensuring accurate taxonomy and proper preservation. I am currently working on a project that involves establishing a fungarium within the herbarium, alongside conducting a fungal inventory for the College of the Redwoods campus. This effort, which includes documenting fungal diversity and ecological habitats, contributes to citizen science through platforms like iNaturalist and supports public education by producing educational materials for the campus community. With a strong academic focus on fungi and mycoheterotrophic plants, I am also the proud recipient of a SOMA Scholarship. I am passionate about fungi photography and enjoy exploring the artistic potential of fungi and plants through the creation of natural dyes and pigments
