Faculty Biographies
Alexander Sherman
Alex Sherman is a seasoned mycology professional with over 14 years of experience in fungi research and industry leadership. His expertise spans a diverse range of applications, including developing cGMP programs for medicinal mushrooms, scaling production for specialty mushrooms like Maitake, and innovating sustainable practices such as fungi-based plastic degradation. At UC Davis, Alex focused on nutrient cycling in soil systems, with a special interest in mycorrhizal fungi’s role in perennial agriculture and forestry applications. This passion for dynamic farming systems extended into niche truffle farming, where Alex studied under world-renowned mycologists to master truffle cultivation techniques and deepen his understanding of soil science. Alex also served on the Psychedelic Plants and Fungi and Botanical Raw Materials committees at the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), shaping industry testing standards for functional mushrooms. His unique combination of scientific research, applied expertise, and leadership continues to influence sustainable agriculture and the functional mushroom industry.
